First new show with new band. Tonight Will Burn.

When I first knew my time with Through Tragedy was coming to an end, I always wondered when my first show would be. Truthfully I didn’t expect to play another show for a year or more.

All things happen for a reason, and I feel like parting ways with TT was for the best.

First show, of many to come!

After the process of giving CC the axe, we got a message from J over the email with the claim ‘your old drummer is decent, but i’ll blow him out of the water’. We set up a jam with him. Calvin, John, and I set up the jam for Slaughter House Studios in Calgary, which is basically an old slaughter house converted into a jam space in Calgary. It’s price is high (Considering) but it’s decent for a last resort. We set up multiple jams with him, and after 3 or 4 we decided to ask him to join; which he did.

After J joined up we went onto the arduous task of finding a bass player. Over the years, calvin and I jammed with our fair share of zany bassists. One who came over, claimed to skateboard while playing bass, only liked pantera, and then sequentially blew his amp during the jam. Needless to say we didn’t call him back.

Bass players were a scarcity back then and we didn’t get too much hits.

Eventually we got a message from our friend Josh (As the Romans do) and he said that we could move into the jam space and share with the band. This was a blessing as it was cheap, and we could jam long and have late nights.

After a month or so of jamming here, we started to slowly record a few demo tracks. We recorded 4 songs, 3 of which we have scrapped and only one has remained to this day and is slotted to be re-recorded (and given justice to) for our full length.

As we were recording the demos and trying out bass players (We jammed with a bunch of douches.) R came into the picture due to John. R became our bass player after a short amount of jams.

R in general was a fiasco. He had a snerious drug issue as it would seem and his weapon of choice was Cocaine. The first time this became noticeable was at our house warming for our original house (That Calvin and I moved in together) The Acadia Residence. J told us that R was doing Cocaine in my bathroom. This was not cool at all.

R brought a slew of goofy friends which he would try and convince us to let move into the house (Surprisingly, his friends also did Cocaine…and copious amounts of it).

There were always lots of issues with R, we used to have huge band arguments over stupid bullshit such as R which would end in him screaming and leaving jam all together.

But desperate times come desperate measures. We weathered these storms, got through it all and got our shit together to play some shows.

Around this time R moved in with us for one reason or another (Cheaper rent for us, his old room mate was a dick … apparently. There was one week where we played three shows. One at the Stetson, then the Distillery and then Verns.

On our third show R went into freak-out mode and began screaming and shouting about how he would never play verns again (Because he thought Clint the owner stole his gear…which he obviously did not) On top of this he dropped the N-bomb on stage and other stupid shit.

Needless to say, we were none to pleased.

The next band practice I showed up and Calvin and the others expressed how R could not continue with us anymore. Understandable.

When we broke the news to R he threatened to burn our house down and other douche-related activities.

22nd Birthday show

It’s funny to take a step back for a moment and see how far you’ve come in such a short period of time. Only around three years ago me and Calvin met and started up Through Tragedy. It feels like a long time but that’s simply cause so much has happened in that time.

So many people my age are so focused on growing up and moving onto life so quickly, due to their misconception of feeling old. I’m still in my very early twenties, and i’m going to continue going on adventures while there still IS time.

Don’t be so quick to grow up, smell the roses on the side of the road. As Calvin would say, don’t be a life cattle. Doing the same routine over and over ( Mostly work, home, sleep or whatever). Do exciting shit while you’re still free.

We have the rare opportunity which others don’t have - that is to do whatever the fuck we want.

Don’t take that privilege for granted.

In the Beginning.

I write this here for one specific reason: To remember. To remember all the hard work, energy, effort, laughs, good days, bad days, and the worse days.

Simply put: All the important stuff in the past 3 years that I feel has made me who I am now.

In the beginning, there was Jordan and myself jamming. Jordan was my ex room mate from university who recently picked up the drums and since I was currently not in a band I figured I would jam some guitar with him.

Eventually things picked up and we were stringing together some songs, this is when I wrote the first little bit for a song called Conversations Between the Fallen. After this song was written we decided to look for people to jam with us.

After going through half a dozen people or so, me and Calvin met through the magic of the internet, and after meeting him and jamming the first few riffs of Conversations he decided he’d come and jam with us - which eventually led to him joining up.

Shortly thereafter, Jordan decided school was his priority and he could no longer continue with the band. Immediate thoughts from Calvin were if the band (Or whatever you want to call it at this stage, the sperm (or egg) of Through Tragedy) would be calling it quits. I reassured him it does not mean that, and we will find a new drummer.

Thanks to the magic of the Internet, we met a new drummer, whom I will call CC (Cause i’m sure he would not appreciate his name and the forthcoming acts described being put on the internet - I’m considerate like that ;) ).

CC was a man, who initially claimed to be a 27 year old (which later proved to be he was actually 33 years old) man. If I had the gift of foresight, I would have known that this was the first sign to fucking crazy town.

CC seemed to be the master of Drama, he would shed crocodile tears over Calvin or myself being five minutes late, or if Calvins brother would come to watch us jam, amongst many other mundane issues.

The second sign to crazy town was that after only jamming with us a handful of times, he felt the need to sit us down, scream and yell at me about how we handled calling off jams with a guy who was jamming bass with us for a brief period. Calvin claims that he was pretty sure that CC was going to reach out and attack me, and a full on brawl would ensue. I agree with Calvin, veins were popping out of his neck, his face was beet red, and spit was flying. Unfortunately words cannot describe this image to its’ fullest extent, simply for the fact that CC was a seriously ugly bastard, so the previous three qualities added on top of that were a true sight to behold.

Me and Calvin stood head strong through all this crazy, simply due to the fact that we were in a desperate spot and just wanted to start making music. Around this time me and Calvin finished up the song Conversations Between the Fallen and this video was born in order to find a guitarist. (Back then I was playing guitar simply to help out)

Looking back this video makes me laugh, cause it’s BAD, but it was all we had and it luckily led us to finding a guitar player.

These videos we would make would become a habit, something to help me write lyrics to and advertise for bass players.

These videos are the cause for my retinas being permanently scarred.

One day we were reviewing our videos, and CC was skipping through a few of them. Unfortunately he skipped too far and skipped it right to a video of him jerking off into a cum rag.

Suffice to say, combined with this and after him phoning each and everyone of us threatening that if we didn’t make a click track by the end of the month we would have another “Discussion” as he would like to call them (They were more or less excuses for him to get psychotic and yell (mostly at me) ), he was out of the “band”.

I forgot to mention - CC was the kind of dude that would phone you around dinner time (6-7pm) and have hour long to possibly three hour conversations about the same thing over and over again, and no matter how hard you tried to shake him - you just couldn’t. So it’s easy to imagine that the aforementioned chat about click tracks was a long, long, irritating one.

It pains me to say, that this is only the first two months of existence of what became Through Tragedy.
